What to shoot in January

Whether you like it or not, the festive season has come to a close, and with the cold weather keeping people like myself indoors, unless you really have to go out, then why not try your hand at some indoor photography.

One thing that can keep you amused for hours, and it can produce some very creative effects, is painting with light, and I mean this in the literal sense.

You need 2 objects besides your camera; A tripod and a torch.

First of all you need to set your camera up on to your tripod, or any surface that will hold your camera steady. Once you have done this, set your camera to shutter priority and choose a shutter speed between 10 and 30 seconds, depending on how much painting you wish to do.

Once you have selected your shutter speed you then need to manually focus your camera to where you will stand with your torch. you'll need to turn off all light sources, then press the shutter release and paint away in front of your camera until your heart is content, or until the shutter closes.

Painting with light

You can see an example 'provided by Shaun' on the right of how this works, and with a little more time and some creativity, you can produce some amazing work.

So why not give this a try and show us how creative you can be with a torch as your subject.

Suggested by Luke, this is a video demonstrating what is achievable

Great idea Si, and speaking from experience great fun.
You're never quite sure what you're going to end up with.

If you want to see a really good example of the full potential of possibilities you can do with this photo effect, check out this video on YouTube! It's basically an animation of lots of photos of light graffiti!
(I don't know if I'm allowed to post the link, so just search "SkyCast.com -- Star Wars v Star Trek" on YouTube)
-Enjoy!
