What to Shoot this August

I noticed the other day farmers harvesting wheat and corn from their fields. It seemed early to me but then I suppose it is that time of year when the changes that alter the colour of our countryside begin to happen.

One of the many benefits to be gained from being a photographer is that the changing of seasons can hold a different meaning than it does for others. For some people, the changes from summer to autumn and then autumn to winter are met with a disgruntledness and thoughts of how long must be waited before green can be seen and warmth can be felt again.

For me though as a photographer, as each season is turning I start thinking of what that particular season will bring for me to photograph- something I've not had the opportunity to photograph for a year. Maybe if our environments weren't ever-changing we might get bored of photographing the same things every day?

There are plenty of notable historical dates for August but none that seem too appropriate for inspiring photography. Do let me know though if you think I'm wrong! As for events, the largest arts festival in the world- the Edinburgh Fringe- is happening from the 3rd to the 25th; easier to get to for some of us than others, but given that it runs for 3 weeks maybe now's the time to take that short break and capture some colourful photos.

In a similar vein, the Notting Hill carnival is on the 24th and 25th.

If none of that floats your boat, then who doesn't like a national holiday? The Late Summer bank holiday is on the 25th, so fingers crossed for some nice weather and I'll be looking forward to getting out and about with my camera!

One of the other facts I've unearthed is news of an 80% lunar eclipse on the 16th, peaking at 10:11pm. With luck on our side it'll be a clear night and it might be interesting to see what results we can get with the camera?

July and August are the most popular months for holidays to be taken. I would hope that any Gosnapper relishes the opportunity for new things to photograph, so if you are going away don't forget your battery charger and memory cards! Aside from the main attractions at holiday destinations, how about capturing sunrises and sunsets- a good test of finding the right exposure; don't forget to post your photos in the Gosnap gallery when you get back!

Or why not try your wide angle lens and experiment with taking photos of sand castles? There could be some interesting results. There’s also the chance to try your hand at taking some of the classic shots that your destination will be known for. Can you create something you could see others buying as a postcard? Or maybe you might fancy your chances at submitting it as a stock photo when you get back?!

Happy snapping!
